Sunrise Beach man killed after car strikes utility pole in Columbia

A 72-year-old Sunrise Beach man was killed after the car he was driving struck a utility pole in central Columbia Sunday.

It happened in the 300 block of William Street just before 2 p.m.

Police said the car veered off the left side of the road and struck a utility pole.

Kenneth Taggart had to be removed from the car by medical and fire crews.

He was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said it’s believed Taggart had a medical condition just before the crash that caused him to lose control of the car.

However, authorities emphasize that will not be determined until the medical examiner conducts on autopsy.

Police said speed and impairment by drugs or alcohol are not a factor in this crash.
