Two in custody after Callaway County car chase

A second man is in custody after the two led Callaway County authorities on a car chase early Sunday morning.

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy stopped a white Chevy Trail Blazer at 2:15 a.m. for an equipment violation on Highway 54 near State Road H.

James Wills, 27, of Fulton was driving the car and Brent Gibson was in the passenger seat.

Authorities said Wills was reportedly in possession of a controlled substance and when a the deputy went to arrest Wills, he struggled with the deputy and allegedly struck him before he took off on foot.

The sheriff’s office said Wills then went back to his car and struggled with the deputy again before speeding away.

Wills was at times driving over 100 miles per hour while authorities were pursuing him on various state and county roads.

Law enforcement found the car abandoned on County Road 318 and both men had taken off on foot.

Wills turned himself into the Sheriff’s Department later in the morning and is being held on a $15,339.50 bond.

Gibson was arrested Monday morning shortly before 11:30 for resisting arrest and lawful detention.

Deputies had talked to Gibson on the phone prior to him turning himself in Monday.

Wills has numerous charges against him including assault on a law enforcement officer, theft of a controlled substance and operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner.
