Jefferson City school district addressing overcrowding

The Jefferson City School District is still dealing with overcrowding issues in its schools.

School Board President John Ruth said the city has seen unanticipated growth over the last couple of years.

District officials want to propose a plan to build a new high school while remodeling the current high school and adding a new elementary school.

“The other piece of the proposal that I think is lost on the community sometimes as it relates to our other space growth is in those elementary areas. So when it comes to immediate need, we need to bring in a new elementary building, to bring a 12th elementary school online because the first growth that was really surprising was in that kindergarten class,” said Ruth.

The price tag for the projects could add up to $100 million.
