Flooding risk high this week with multiple rounds of rain
Potential for heavy rain in Mid-Missouri will be high this week as multiple systems make their way through the region.
A Flash Flood Watch is in effect until Wednesday night for areas along and east of Highway 54, including Jefferson City and the Lake of the Ozarks. Between 1-3″ is possible over most of Mid-Missouri, with 4-6″ of rain possible through early Friday for areas near I-44.
A stationary boundary situated south of the Lake of the Ozarks will lift north as a warm front through the rest of the afternoon into the evening, bringing slow moving showers and thunderstorms to Mid-Missouri, bringing the possibility of 0.5″ to 1.5″ of rain through Wednesday.
The highest rain totals will be along and south of the front, mainly south of I-70.
We could see some dry time Wednesday night, but it will be short lived as a cold front approaches from the northwest, and the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill approach from the southwest.
The low pressure center that was associated with Bill will track across southern Missouri Thursday night into Friday, bringing heavy rain to Mid-Missouri, especially for areas south of Highway 50.
There is also a marginal risk for severe weather Tuesday and Wednesday, with the chance for some isolated strong wind gusts between 40-60 mph. On Thursday, there is a slight risk for severe storms in southeast Mid-Missouri, including Osage, Maries, Gasconade, Phelps, and Pulaski counties for the potential of damaging winds and large hail.
A river flood warning continues for the Missouri River and several other Mid-MO rivers through the week.
The Missouri River at Jefferson City crested at 26.83 feet Tuesday and is expected to stay in moderate flood stage until Wednesday afternoon, and fall into minor flood stage through Saturday. At Hermann, the Missouri River will crest Tuesday afternoon at 27.4 feet and will stay in moderate flood stage through Wednesday, and into minor flood stage through Monday.
The Moreau River at Jefferson City will crest at 16.6 feet Wednesday night, and will stay in action stage until the weekend.
So far in June, the Columbia Regional Airport has picked up 4.13″ of rain, putting us at 1.88″ above the monthly average.
Saturday and Sunday look a little more dry, with less cloud cover and high temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90.
