Jefferson City police upgrading patrol car cameras

The Jefferson City Police Department is in the process of installing new cameras into 27 patrol vehicles.

Two cameras will be installed into each car, one on the dash, and another pointing toward the back seat.

It’s a $175,000 project with about half the money coming from sales tax and the rest from drug forfeiture funds.

The most notable feature of the new camera systems is the digital transfer of video data as opposed to burning disks, as the department had to do in the past.

“This is a completely digital package that we have. It’s run through our computers that we have in each of the patrol cars. The video that’s put on the system is uploaded electronically or digitally when we pull into the police station,”Lt. Deric Heislen of the Jefferson City Police Department.

Police say they expect the new camera systems will be fully installed by the end of July.
