Hundreds pray for boy with inoperable brain tumor

A 5-year-old Columbia boy is fighting for his life at MU Women’s and Children’s hospital.

In October, doctors found an inoperable brain tumor and gave Bryson Smith six to 12 months to live. Now, family and friends are praying for more time. Hundreds are expected to show up at the MU Children’s hospital to pray at a rally for Bryson.

“He’s the strongest child I’ve ever known, happy the whole time. He’s been in no pain. He sings and dances when he can in the hospital,” said Brittany Frierson, a close family friend.

Bryson’s mother, Lilly Smith, has had to quit her job to care for Bryson full time, that’s when Frierson stepped in to form Team Bryson. Frierson and others help Smith and Bryson in any way they can, but they can only do so much.

“He’s just taken a turn for the worst, just here recently. Yesterday was the worst day. He was unconscious a lot yesterday, in and out of it,” said Frierson.

Bryson was supposed to take part in a prayer vigil at Mill Creek elementary Friday night, but he’s too sick. So, organizers are taking the prayer vigil to him. Hundreds of people are expected to show up at Children’s Hospital Friday.

“Of course we wish we could fix it and have a fix button. Unfortunately, we can’t. So, this is the best way that we know how to help make it a little easier,” said Frierson.
