Severe storms possible Thursday

Showers & t-storms are expected Thursday morning. These are not expected to be severe but will produce frequent lightning and heavy downpours. These will move to the southeast and out of Mid-Missouri by early afternoon . As we head through the afternoon, temperatures will warm into the low to mid 80s, causing the atmosphere to become very unstable.

Storms are expected to develop in the warm, moist air through the afternoon with a chance they could become strong or severe. We are also watching for a cluster of storms moving in from the northwest in the late evening and overnight hours which could produce heavy rain with up to an inch and a half of rainfall possible north of I-70 through early Friday morning which could lead to flooding in areas where rivers are already running high. Also, damaging winds are possible with some of these storms as they move in.

Western portions of Mid-Missouri have been upgraded to a slight severe threat for storms which could produce damaging winds of 58 mph or greater and/ or hail 1″ or larger Thursday afternoon and evening. There is also a low chance of a tornado. The rest of Mid-Missouri is under a marginal severe risk which means that isolated storms with damaging winds of 40-60 mph are possible along with hail up to 1 inch in diameter. There is also a very low tornado risk.
