Oklahoma, Texas submit formal application to the SEC
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Oklahoma Sooner and the Texas Longhorns have officially submitted a request to join to the Southeastern Conference.
On Monday morning the schools both told the Big 12 that they would not be renewing their media contract, which run through 2025. The formal application to the SEC does ask if the schools can join after that year, however, their arrival could come much quicker than that. However, both schools would need to buy themselves out of their media contracts with the Big 12, in order for that to happen.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said, in a press release, that the conference will now look for a consensus among its current members.
"Per the bylaws of the SEC, a vote of at least three-fourths of the SEC's 14 members is required to extend an invitation for membership," he said.
There is no word on when the conference will have an official vote.
