Report: Ehren Earleywine exchanges email jabs with Missouri State

Mizzou softball is done with postseason play, but their coach remains in the headlines.

According to a report by ESPNW, Missouri softball coach Ehren Earleywine sent an expletive-filled email to Missouri State coach Holly Hesse, who started the disagreement by making several personal accusations against Mizzou’s head coach.

The report says MU’s director of softball operations, Lisa Simmons, initially exchanged emailed with Missouri State softball coach Holly Hesse. Simmons and Hesse try to organize a 2016 date, but Hesse declines the invitation for a 2016 fixture.

In the emails, obtained through the report’s open records request, Hesse claims Earleywine could be overheard saying Missouri State was no better than a”5A High School Team.” She continues her written attack, accusing Earleywine of bypassing NCAA rules. She also accuses Earleywine’s team of spitting out sunflower seeds on Missouri State’s field, saying there is a sign that forbids sunflower seeds in the ball park.

Simmons differs to Earleywine, who responds with barbs of his own. He remarks of Missouri State’s low RPI and lack of recent success. He also denies any wrongdoing regarding NCAA recruiting. Earleywine also takes exception to Hesse, citing her lack of integrity.

Mizzou played one game at Missouri State, winning 6-0 on April 23.

The report also posts an apology from Earleywine, which (in part) states, “I am sincerely sorry for the unprofessional comments I made… I apologize to Coach Hesse, the Missouri State softball program and our fans for the way I reacted and know this was not the proper way to handle the situation.”
