Mid-Missouri police react to ban of federally-issued, military-style equipment
Law enforcement across the country is weighing in after the White House announced a nationwide ban on federally issued military-style equipment in local police forces.
The announcement comes in the wake of the controversy over a militarized police response to unrest last summer in Ferguson.
Captain Doug Shoemaker with the Jefferson City Police said it’s kind of a confusing time, because a few years ago there was a major push for this type of equipment.
Jefferson City does not have any big tanks they’ve received through federal agencies, and the vehicle they do have is paid for by a sales tax.
In the future, departments can still use that type of equipment, but they have to purchase it through a private supplier.
