Cole Co. Sheriff warns of jury duty scam

The Cole County Sheriff’s Department is warning Mid-Missourians of a scam involving jury duty in Cole County.

Scammers call people identifying themselves as Deputy James Marshall from the Cole County Sheriff’s Department.

The caller informs the victim they have missed jury duty in April, and Judge Joyce has issued two warrants for them; one for missing jury duty and the other for contempt of court.

The scammers instruct people to get 2 Green Dot money cards worth $500 each and bring them to the 1st floor of the courthouse in Room A on a particular date.

Callers then ask for their cell phone numbers so they can keep in direct contact. If anyone gives them their cell phone number, the caller will call them later and tell them he can’t make it to court. The caller then asks the victim to give him the numbers from the Green Dot cards and he will take care of the warrants.

If the victims tell him they are not giving him their cell phone number, he hangs up.
