Scammers pose as deputies

A scam involving phone calls from someone posing as a Boone County Sheriff’s Department deputy has hit several counties in Mid-Missouri, including Pulaski County.

Victims said the caller tries to sound legitimate by saying they are a deputy and that a warrant is out for your arrest.

In Pulaski County, scammers are allegedly calling from the sheriff’s department number, saying the person who called must pay up in order to not get arrested.

Boone County Detective Tom O’Sullivan said this is the biggest red flag.

He said they will never ask for money, and if you do get a call from the sheriff’s department, they will understand if you want them to verify who they are.

“We always identify ourselves, and if people aren’t comfortable, we would tell them, ‘Look hang up. Call the sheriff’s department. Ask for me,'” said O’Sullivan.

O’Sullivan said another similar scam going around is callers identifying themselves as the circuit clerk’s office, saying you need to pay for not showing up to jury duty.

Pulaski County Sheriff Ron White told ABC 17 News they do not make phone calls, and will show up at your house if there is a warrant for your arrest.
