Heavy rain, strong storms possible this weekend

Friday night through Sunday night will be an active weather period across Mid-Missouri.

Some scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible late Friday night into early Saturday, with heavier rain pushing up from the south Saturday evening into early Sunday.

Saturday night through Sunday morning, an area of organized showers and thunderstorms will bring the potential 0.5″ to 1″ of rain, with some strong storms possible in western Missouri.

Sunday’s severe weather chance will depend on how quickly rain and storms push out of the area in the morning and early afternoon. If clouds and rain move out quickly and sunshine can filter back in, temperatures will warm quickly into the upper 70s and lower 80s, with humidity sticking around. That will help increase instability to provide fuel for later storm development ahead of a cold front.

Hail up to 1″ in diameter or larger and winds up to 60 MPH or greater are the primary threats in storms that do develop. The tornado threat does look low at this time.

Between Friday night and Monday morning, up to 2″ of rain is possible across Mid-Missouri, with locally higher amounts possible in stronger thunderstorms.

Flash flooding could be a concern on small streams and creeks, as well as low-lying areas.

Monday afternoon, we begin to cool down and dry out as the cold front continues to move east.
