Flags raised to honor fallen Mid-Missouri sergeant

Hundreds of flags were raised to honor a Mid-Missouri sergeant Friday.

Fellow veterans, family members, and volunteers gathered in Centralia for the Avenue of Flags.

It was in honor of Sergeant Rodney Griffin, who’s remains were recently identified after nearly 40 years.

They were just brought back to his family Thursday.

Sergeant Griffin graduated from Centralia High School in 1968, then killed in the line of duty two years later.

Friends and family said it’s emotional seeing the community coming together to remember him.

“The tribute to Rodney and the dedication and service and sacrifice he gave so many years ago we are just so thankful to have him home,” said Tom Nelson, Griffin’s brother-in-law.

A visitation for Sergeant Griffin will be held Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 10:30 in the Centralia High School Gymnasium.

Governor Nixon ordered flags to be flown at half-staff Saturday across the state.

The funeral is open to the publiv
