Fire causes smoke damage to downtown Jefferson City store

A Sunday fire nearly cost the new Jefferson City mayor her downtown business.

Hair Plaza downtown caught fire at around 3:00 Sunday afternoon.

In our 9:00 a.m. newscast, ABC 17’s Kristie Reeter sat down with mayor-elect Carrie Tergin.

Her store, Carrie’s Hallmark, is next door to Hair Plaza.

Tergin said the experience brought some public safety hazards to her attention.

“Something that I noticed going door-to-door, which is kind of funny, is that homes don’t really have marked addresses and where they’re at. So, go home tonight and think, ‘if the fire department had to, could they find my home? And if there was a fire hydrant nearby, can they find it, or is it buried behind some bushes?”

Fire officials believe the blaze was electrical, and no one was injured.
