Jefferson City man sentenced for stealing from Wounded Warriors

A Jefferson City man was sentenced last week to prison time for stealing from the Wounded Warrior Project.

34-year-old Andrew Fortner was sentenced to four years each on two counts of forgery.

Fortner was captured twice on surveillance cameras at the St. James Country Mart asking for and receiving donations for Wounded Warriors in 2013.

Representatives from Wounded Warriors said the charity doesn’t do this type of fundraising, and they have not received any money from Fortner.

Fortner was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves at the time of the incidents.

He was then discharged for unsatisfied participation, and was demoted from sergeant to private class E-1.

According to a release from the Phelps Co. prosecutor, a spokesperson for the U.S. Recruitment Office in Rolla said, “Fortner is a perpetual, habitual liar and has done a disservice.”
