Crews battle 5 acre outside fire in Boone Co.

Things got out of control Monday after someone tried to burn trash behind their home in Boone Co.

Firefighters told ABC 17 about 5 acres are destroyed on Remie Road off Route Z, about 30 minutes northeast of Columbia.

Eight crews responded at around 3:15 Monday, and kept flames from reaching the woods.

A few hours earlier, a Red Flag Warning went into effect for parts of Mid-Missouri.

The conditions are dry and windy, which causes fires to spread quickly.

Jefferson City officials said its not only illegal, but extremely dangerous to have open burning right now.

They changed their ordinance last year, shortening the season by two weeks, from November 1 to March 1.

“We try to make it an educational experience informing people of what the ordinance allows, but unfortunately if the residents decide not to attempt to follow the ordinance we can issue a citation, and you do go to municipal court,” said Jason Turner with the Jefferson City Fire Dept.

The fine for burning in Jefferson City can be up to $1000 and 90 days in jail.

There has been at least one fire in Cole Co. and another in Callaway Co. Monday.
