Donations pour in for tow truck driver stabbed, beaten, robbed

The tow truck driver beaten, stabbed, and robbed while trying to help a car stopped along I-70 is finally having his luck turn around, thanks to a lot of help from the community.

Just last Friday, Al Baker was worried about his struggling business after missing weeks of work because he was recovering in the hospital.

Baker said after owning and running Baker’s Towing/Al’s Auto for 35 years, he’s worried it will shut down if he can’t come back to work full time.

“I’m not here so some of my usual customers aren’t coming,” Baker said.

His friend made a GoFundMe page to try and raise money to help.

Since he posted it Friday afternoon, people have already donated $2,000.

On top of that, Baker said something overwhelming happened this weekend.

“I got to work at 9 a.m. on Saturday and people kept pouring in, on after another, handing me envelopes but wouldn’t let me look inside,” Baker said. “They all said they saw the story and had to help.”

What was inside those envelopes may help save Baker’s business.

“It was just money and money and it totaled up to almost $6,000 that these people gave me!” Baker said.

Thanks to the generations donations, Baker put the first chunk to good use Monday.

“I paid some of the bills that were due and now I don’t have to worry about them so it was a big relief,” he said.

While he was incredibly thankful for all the help, he couldn’t stop talking about how he felt about these people giving him their hard-earned money.

“And I just, I don’t understand why they would do this because a lot of them don’t have anymore money than I have,” Baker said. “I feel bad, I feel like I should be helping them.”

That money wasn’t the only good news Baker had to share.

“I’m all booked for tomorrow! People are calling me again to get work done,” Baker exclaimed.

When asked if he had a message for all the people who have helped him so far, he kept it short and sweet because he got choked up.

“I love you all,” he said, through tears.

Right now, police still have no leads on who attacked him.
