CPD releases report detailing use of force incidents in 2014

The Columbia Police Department has released its annual report detailing the number of times officers used force in 2014.

Last year, Columbia police officers responded to 153, 784 incidents with people.

4,704 arrests stemmed from those incidents.

Out of those arrests, police had to use force 308 times.

Some of the incidents involved multiple people and some involved officers using multiple techniques.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the types of force used:

1. Officers used strikes 20 times.

2. Pepper spray was used 32 times.

3. Dog bites were used twice.

4. A Taser was used in 32 incidents.

5. Officers drew or showed their guns on 150 occasions.

Of the 308 responses, four were found to be “improper.”

Of the 153, 784 contacts made with citizens, CPD received 19 complaints accusing officers of misconduct.

According to the report, CPD initiated 48 investigations after contact with citizens.
