Columbia school board will focus on mental health issues

The Columbia school board is scheduled to meet and discuss mental initiatives in the district.

They’ll highlight the work of the newly formed Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition.

A report will be presented to the board on their findings. The report says between 12 and 20 percent of American students have a diagnosable mental health disorder.

The report concludes that number translates to about 2,160 to 3,600 CPS students with mental health needs that may interfere with academic achievement.

The report says CPS has responded, but knows more action is necessary.

The board is also scheduled to vote on budget amendments and will hear a financial update of the 2014-15 budget.
