A light wintry mix is possible this weekend.

The polar jet stream will retreat to the north this weekend allowing temperatures to modify slightly reaching into the lower 30s Sunday. At the same time the subtropical jet stream will strengthen and move across the southern states, sending moisture in our direction. A wave of low pressure aloft from the Pacific ocean will move over Missouri Sunday afternoon and night.

Temperatures at the surface are forecast to reach 32-35 Sunday afternoon and drop into the upper 20s overnight. Above the surface, a warm wedge of air will keep temperatures above freezing until late Sunday night. As a result, most of the precipitation is expected to fall as rain or drizzle, freezing on contact with below freezing temperatures at ground level. As the air aloft cools, there could be some sleet or snow mix in with the rain Sunday night. At this time it looks like minor icing could cause slick roads Sunday night.

A slight change in the temperature profile could alter the type of precipitation that falls Sunday. Also, at this time the precipitation looks light but there could be a change in moisture content by Sunday. The forecast will be updated in the next couple days as new data comes in so please check back for specific forecast amounts.
