Messy start to the new year, possible weekend wintry weather

A low pressure system currently producing wintry weather over the 4 corners region of the Southwest Wednesday afternoon will track across the southern Plains through the remainder of the week, and is expected to impact Mid-Missouri by late Friday night into the weekend.

Right now, multiple weather models are in consensus of this system tracking into our area mainly after midnight early Saturday morning.

Temperatures are expected to be near the freezing mark, making the precipitation type tricky to determine at this time.

Forecast temperature profiles of the atmosphere are indicating a rain/freezing rain mix prior to sunrise and into the early morning Saturday. Precipitation amounts range from 0.2″ to 0.5.”

Most of the models are in agreement that there will be a break in precipitation from the middle to late afternoon Saturday. As this low pressure system tracks northeast with cooler air behind it, precipitation could transition to snow as it wraps around the system. There is a possibility of some accumulating snow Saturday evening into early Sunday, but the details and exact timing on that are a little more unclear, as the track and location of this system and temperatures will make a significant impact on what we see.
