Recycling old electronics

At christmas time, many get all the new latest gadgets as gifts, but as left wondering what to do with the old ones. If you think selling them is out of the question, you might want to think about recycling them.

A few months ago, lightening hit near Timothy Gerrels home. “It knocked out about three tvs, a garage door opener, some outside lights, a few inside lights, this and that, not a lot of damage, but it did cause I imagine a strong surge of electricity through the wires”, says Gerrels.

Now that he is getting new electronic gadgets, he’s recycling the old ones. “Maybe they can recycle it and use it for something better than what I need it for because I wouldn’t know how to use it”, says Gerrels.

If you got a new state of the art holiday present, you too might be wondering what to do with the old ones.

Scottie Farrow with Midwest Recycling Center says, “we’ll gladly recycle those items for you”. Farrow also says it’s important that you know that they accept everything from curling irons, to lamps, to tv’s and computers. That many trash companies refuse to pick up some electronic products, based on what they are made of and to try to prevent those harmful chemicals from going to a landfill.

“Mercury, bromated flame retardants, the list is nearing endless about the chemicals and it’s not about global warming, it’s about the water”, says Farrow.

At MRC in Jefferson City, the starting cost to take some of the larger items is $15 dollars and up.
