Officials: large house fire started under back deck

The cause of a large Columbia house fire remains under investigation, but on Monday officials said damages will cost roughly $350,000.

Around 2 p.m. Saturday, Columbia and Boone County firefighters responded to a home fire on Foxwood Court off Scott Boulevard in west Columbia.

No one was inside the house at the time of the fire, firefighters said. Several neighbors said the family was on vacation. One neighbor said she heard a loud boom and came outside to see lots of smoke around the home.

On Monday investigators confirmed the blaze started under the back deck, spreading through the garage, part of the home and the attic.

A total of nine units from the Columbia Fire Department and Boone County Fire Protection District responded to 101 Foxwood Court.

“We arrived at the scene about seven minutes later and found heavy fire and smoke in the back of the structure that spread quickly to the structure,” Brad Fraizer with the Columbia Fire Department said. “And what you see behind us is quite a bit of fire damage as a result.”

The fire was under control in about 30 minutes, firefighters said.

Two ambulances responded to the scene as well. One firefighter had to be treated on the scene for minor injuries, but was not taken to the hospital, Fraizer said.
