Trial starts for Jeff City woman accused of deadly wreck

The trial started Monday for a Jefferson City woman accused of driving drunk, going the wrong way on I-70, killing a man in a head-on crash. Kelli Smith, 25, is charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors said Smith went to several Columbia bars back in February 2012, before she traveled for at least seven miles going west in the eastbound lanes of I-70.

She hit another vehicle head-on near Danville in Montgomery County. Thomas Sullivan was killed in the other car after it caught on fire.

Last week, ABC 17 News reported a judge agreed to suppress evidence supporting the claims Smith was drugged and date-raped just prior to the wreck, which means it can not be used during her trial. Her lawyers can later appeal the decision.
