Despite Ferguson unrest, Show-Me-Bowl to go on as planned
Missouri high school football teams will continue to play their state title games in St. Louis this weekend, the Missouri State High School Activities Association announced today. There are safety concerns surrounding the “Show-Me-Bowl” with the unstable events in nearby Ferguson.
“We continue to keep the people of Ferguson and everyone involved in this situation in our thoughts and prayers,” said Dr. Kerwin Urhahn, the MSHSAA’s Executive Director, in a statement. We continue to be communicating with local and state authorities to obtain as much information as we can on this fluid situation.”
Jason West, spokesperson for MSHSAA, reiterated that sentiment. But he also added the Association is keeping its options open.
“As with any of our championships, we do have alternatives,” West said in an email to ABC 17. ” If we need to make changes to the schedule, we can make those changes as need be.”
West did not specify what those alternatives sites may be.
“We have been given assurances at all levels that the Edward Jones Dome and downtown St. Louis will be a safe place for our participants and spectators to enjoy their time in the city this weekend at the football championships,” Urhahn continues in his statement.
Battle, South Callaway and Westran are three Mid-Missouri teams playing for state title hardware. Westran plays Valle Catholic at 4:15 on November 28. Battle will follow that game, as the Spartans will face Nixa at 7:30. South Callaway plays Lamar for the Class 2 title on November 29 at 2:15 p.m.
