Man found dead in Callaway Co. after fall from bluff

A man firefighters had been searching for for hours Thursday night was found dead east of Ashland near the Boone-Callaway County line.

A Highway Patrol helicopter found 53-year-old Randall Fennewald from Columbia off south Backbone Road.

The Callaway County Sheriff told ABC 17 News an autopsy revealed Fennewald died from blunt force trauma consistent with a fall.

The Southern Boone County Fire Protection District and Highway Patrol searched the Three Creeks Conservation Area Thursday afternoon.

About two dozen people searched the 1500 acre area for 5 hours.

Crews on the scene told ABC 17 News the man called 911 himself, but they were not able to reach him again.

The man said he hit his head and was in danger of passing out, not able to move.

Crews began tracking his cell phone and pinged it three times within a half mile in the Turkey Creek area.

Law enforcement used horses and a MSHP helicopter to search for the man.

No foul play is suspected.
