“Super” Sam Santhuff passes away

Sam Santhuff, known as “Super Sam” to those familiar with the Fulton boy’s struggle, died Friday morning.

Santhuff was 6 years old.

Santhuff passed away at St. Louis Children’s Hospital after more than a year diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. Santhuff went through chemotherapy, as well as an experimental treatment involving stem cells from bone marrow. Santhuff’s family, along with organizations such as the American Red Cross, Delete Blood Cancer and the Hooligan’s biker group, held many fundraisers for him and other children battling disease.

Sam’s mother, Cassie Santhuff, told ABC 17 News his visitation will be Tuesday at First Christian Church in Fulton from 4-7 p.m. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the same church.

The family invited all children who wish to attend the burial at Callaway Memorial Garden in Fulton after the funeral. They will release gold balloons at the site.

Those wishing to donate can do so by writing a check payable to the First Christian Church in Fulton with “Super Sam” in the memo line. The church is also accepting donations to have a memorial for Sam.

(Author’s note, 12:23 a.m.: The original story said Sam’s visitation began at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The story now reflects the correct time of the visitation, beginning at 4 p.m. and ending at 7 p.m.

The story also referenced Cassie Santhuff as the one releasing balloons at the burial Wednesday. The story is changed to show all invited can release balloons.)
