Car runs into retaining wall in Columbia

A man is recovering after the car he was driving ran into a retaining wall in Columbia.

It happened around 11:30 Saturday morning.

Emergency crews responded to a car crash on Business Loop 70.

Deon Jones was driving a friend’s car when he crashed into a retaining wall behind the Thirsty Turtle.

Officer Gamal Castile with the Columbia Police Department said the accident may have been partly caused by excessive speed.

“The driver tried to avoid a bird that was flying into his window,” Castile said. “He swerved, lost control and ended up crashing into the rock retaining wall.”

As a precaution, Jones was taken to University Hospital by ambulance.

As of Saturday afternoon, Jones had been released.
