Majority of Americans alarmed by ISIS, according to new poll
On Monday a CNN survey shows seven in 10 Americans believe ISIS has the resources to launch an attack against the United States.
In two days Americans will learn what President Barack Obama is planning to fight ISIS.
This week is the 13th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, causing more concern across the states.
On Monday in the United State there are no current terror alerts on the National Terrorism Advisory system.
Obama has described ISIS as a serious threat, while the United Kingdom raised its terror threat to severe.
ABC 17 News spoke with Professor Paul Wallace on Wednesday, who said his friend who used to be in the CIA told him the terror threat is low in Missouri.
However, Wallace disagrees.
“He maintains there are no real targets in Missouri, and I argue with him because I think a nuclear plant anywhere in the country could be a high threat target,” said Wallace.
There is a nuclear plant in Mid Missouri- 30 miles from Columbia and Jefferson City in Callaway County.
Wallace said with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks three days away that is something to be worried about.
“Any commemorative event like 9/11 is a target date for some sort of violent act,” said Wallace.
Two years ago on Sept. 11, the U.S. ambassador to Libya was killed when the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was attacked by Islamic militants.
Wallace said if there was attack in America he doesn’t think it would be ISIS because they are training and recruiting.
“They have their hands full,” said Wallace, “I wouldn’t be surprised though if al-Qaida is planning something, because they are being eclipsed by the Islamic state which is ISIS.”
So far, ISIS has recruited about 10- 20,000 fighters including roughly 200 Americans.
Wallace said the Americans are our greatest threat.
“That’s a major concern. Why are they going? And how can we conquer that.” said Wallace.
Wallace said now a lot of intelligence is being directed to making lists of those Americans fighting for ISIS.
President Obama will outline his strategy against ISIS on Wednesday.
Wallace said the three point plan the president will make is airstrikes, retraining and equipping Iraqi military, and what we will do in Syria.
