Suspects on the run after Columbia home invasion Saturday morning

The Columbia Police Department continues to search for several suspects who burglarized a home and took a man captive early Saturday morning.

Officers responded to a call from the 1100 block of Sunset Lane about an injured man. They found the 31-year-old victim in a backyard, claiming he had been abducted from his home in the 200 block of Apple Tree Court.

According to a release, further investigation revealed three to five masked men armed with handguns forced open the front door of the apartment and demanded money. At the time, the man, a 22-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy were inside.

The release said the suspects forced the man into the trunk of the woman’s rented vehicle when they did not find any money. Eventually, the man escaped from the trunk near Broadway and West Boulevard. The suspects fired one shot at him, but he was not hit.

The man told officers some of the suspects stayed behind with the other two people inside the apartment. When officers arrived at their home, the woman told officers the men ran away from the area just before officers arrived. The boy had run away to a nearby house and hid in the backyard.

The woman and boy were not injured, but the woman’s vehicle is still missing.

Officer Latisha Stroer with the Columbia Police Department told ABC 17 it is not clear if this home invasion is connected to the same crime that happened on Premier Lane early Thursday morning. Although, she admits they are similar in that in both cases, the suspects demanded money.

Officers have not made any arrests in the case, and the investigation is still ongoing.
