Hickman football coach arrested for DWI
Hickman High School football coach Arnel Monroe will hold a practice with the team Monday night after being arrested for DWI over the weekend.
Monroe responded to the arrest.
“I am very sorry this incident has occurred,” Monroe said in a text to ABC 17 Sports Director Austin Kim. “It is an embarrassment to my family both personal and professional as well as, to me personally.”
“I will seek redress of this situation through my legal counsel and to that end maintain my innocence,” Monroe continued.
When asked about his status as Hickman football coach, Monroe said he had no further comment.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Hickman football coach Arnel Monroe was arrested for driving while intoxicated, Columbia police confirmed. Boone County Sheriff’s records state he was arrested at 4:22 A.M. Sunday. Monroe was arrested by Columbia Police at a DWI checkpoint near Clark Lane in Columbia, according to their spokesperson. He was released on $500 bail.
This Monroe’s second DWI arrest in Columbia. He served two-years probation for driving while intoxicated in 2006, according to court records.
Monroe was suspended from the team for nearly two weeks during the 2013 season, though Hickman never specified why Monroe was away from the team. The Kewpies went 3-6 last season, losing in the first round of districts to Francis Howell Central.
A message left for Hickman High School Sunday morning was not immediately returned.
Monroe has been the Kewpies’ football coach since 2011.
