Suspect arrested in stabbing death near Columbia

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department arrested a suspect on Tuesday in the May stabbing death of a 40-year-old man north of Columbia.

21-year-old Charles Trevion Key was arrested for allegedly stabbing Richard Bennett to death at his apartment on West Wilcott Street near Prathersville on May 28. Boone County deputies picked Key up at Fulton State Hospital Tuesday.

According to court documents, Bennett was able to identify his killer shortly before he died. They state neighbors told police that Bennett said, “Tre stabbed me.”

As deputies arrived, Key also walked out of Bennett’s apartment. He voluntarily went to the sheriff’s department for questioning.

Det. Tom O’Sullivan with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department said, “Our guys got there, obviously saw the man was injured and the nature of the injuries. Got him in an ambulance, took him to University Hospital and unfortunately he died several hours later.”

Key is now charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. His bond is set at $1 million, cash-only.

Tuesday ABC 17 News talked with David Bennett, the twin brother to Richard.

He told us in Richard’s last moments of life he called their mom.

He told her how much he loved her and that Tre was the one who stabbed him.

David Bennett told ABC 17 News the investigation is far from over because there is still no motive in the fatal stabbing.

David said his brother and Tre were friends with one another, “he was someone that walked around the apartment complex obviously asking for this and that and everything else. My brother would give him anything,” said David.
