Diabetes on the rise in Missouri and the U.S.
About 29 million people have diabetes in America, and slightly more than 8 million people have undiagnosed diabetes. To compare that number, it would equal more than the entire state of Missouri.
Doctor Jason Zerrer at Providence Urgent Care said, “Typically, when you see somebody very skinny… and young… That’s type one. You know when you see somebody who is 55 years old, overweight, smokes… That is your classic type two.”
According to the American Diabetes Association, type two diabetes makes up 90 percent of all diabetic cases. Diabetes is also the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
Zerrer said the “Big Three” is what people need to look out for. Weight Control, style of eating and activity level are important factors for reducing your risk.
Doctors recommend whole grains, water, tea and lean meats for a healthy diet. They said to stay away from sugary drinks, processed foods and margarine.
Adults, however, are not the only ones who have to worry about getting diabetes.
“We’re seeing type two diabetes younger and younger… School kids can get diabetes,” Said Zerrer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2012, more than 9 percent of Americans have diabetes.
