Thousands at risk for sunstroke, skin cancer during summer
Today, people flocked to pools and lakes to enjoy the sun and outdoors.
But the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends people apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before exposure from the sun, as well as after two hours of exposure or swimming.
Melanoma is the most common form of skin cancer in the United States, but the foundation said wearing sunscreen can cut your risk of melanoma by 50 to 73 percent.
Dermatologists said there are signs to look out for with melanoma. If a mole has uneven edges, they recommend you see a doctor.
Sunburns are not the only thing people need to worry about while being outdoors.
Sunstroke happens when the body becomes overheated through overexposure to the sun. The brain cannot control the cooling process of the body.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, more than 90 percent of all skin cancers are associated with exposure to the sun’s harmful radiation.
