Convicted felon allegedly caught with gun in central Columbia

A man found guilty of armed robbery and assault with intent to kill in South Carolina was arrested early Thursday morning in central Columbia.

Alfred Sheets, 38, was pulled over near the Subway on the Business Loop around 1:30 a.m.

Boone County authorities saw a Buick driving erratically and changing lanes. A deputy allegedly smelled burnt marijuana and found a loaded .25 caliber pistol in Sheet’s jacket.

Past records show a 1994 conviction for attempted armed robbery and assault in South Carolina. He served 16 years of his 20-year sentence for shooting a man in the head while trying to rob him in his car.

A spokesperson with the South Carolina Department of Corrections told ABC 17 that Sheets only had to serve at least 50 percent of his sentence to satisfy the law.

Sheets appeared in court Thursday for new charges of unlawful use and possession of a weapon. He could face up to 11 years in prison if convicted.
