Mizzou falls just short of the College World Series

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou softball team fell in a heartbreaking Super Regional finale to James Madison University on Sunday, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers struck first courtesy of a lead off bomb from Brooke Wilmes to put MU up 1-0 in the first inning. However, James Madison responded in the fourth inning, as a sacrifice fly tied up the game.

The scoring continued in the fifth for the Dukes, as Sara Jubas fired in a single to take the 2-1 lead. After that, Mizzou retired starting pitcher Jordan Weber, which is the first time the team has taken out their starting pitcher the entire tournament. She finished with four strikeouts, three hits, and two runs allowed.

With Laurin Krings in to pitch, JMU added on one more courtesy of an RBI single from Odicci Alexander.

Despite a Jenna Laird solo home run, the Mizzou bats could not reach far enough. James Madison sealed the deal in the top of the seventh, gaining the five run advantage. The Dukes will head to their first-ever Women's College World Series.

It was the last game in the black and gold for multiple Tigers, including Hatti Moore, Imani Myint, Kara Decker, and Cayla Kessinger.

Mizzou finishes a historic season 42-17 and just misses out on the team's first World Series appearance since 2011.
