Columbia, Jefferson City release winter snow removal budget numbers

Jefferson City Public Works met Thursday to discuss snow removal and overtime cost for the winter 2014 season.

Jefferson City Public Works Director Britt Smith told ABC 17 News the bills have been paid for this winter, but the city’s stockpile of treatment materials is only 30 percent of it’s capacity.

Smith asked the city for a supplemental appropriation of about $150,000 to purchase salt to fill the bin, noting that they have $25,000 remaining in their existing budget.

Smith said the overtime budget for the street department is about $38,000 over budget, and overtime for the Central Maintenance Division is $5,000 over budget. Public Works is asking for a $50,000 supplemental appropriation to fund overtime costs.

Columbia Public Works spokesman Steve Sapp told ABC 17 that the city budgeted about $547,000 for snow removal in 2014.

Sapp said the city has already spent about $683,000, which is $136,000 over budget. Sapp confirmed that the city will try to find other accounts in Public Works to make up the difference.
