Judge drops Columbia from Ferguson lawsuit

A judge has dismissed the city of Columbia from a lawsuit filed by Ryan Ferguson, who was released from prison in November.

The lawsuit seeks damages over Ferguson’s arrest for the 2001 murder of Kent Heitholt. Ferguson was convicted of murder in 2003, but that conviction was overturned. He is suing eleven people involved in the Heitholt investigation, and names the county of Boone in the lawsuit as well. Ferguson is seeking $100 million in damages.

A judge dismissed the city of Columbia from the suit without prejudice, meaning Ferguson could sue the city at a later time.
