Harrisburg school district to vote on $2 million proposition

Voters in the Harrisburg school district are being asked to decide on a $2 million proposition.

Proposition 2 is considered a “no-tax increase bond issue” which will allow the school to install better security, update technology and improve maintenance for the school district.

Although enrollment in the Harrisburg school district has remained static over the past decade, there are serious concerns that students are not receiving the same up to date technology as other schools in the Mid-Missouri area.

None of the three Harrisburg schools currently has wireless capabilities.

School Superintendent, Lynn Proctor, said, “The main priority is to beef up the access points in the buildings.” She said they do not have the capabilities to lock the main entrances.

Keeping technology up to date is another big concern.

Proctor said, “Right now we don’t have wireless access in any of our classrooms and just the addition of that capacity or wireless capabilities in our classrooms will tremendously improve technology for teaching.

The schools do have security cameras, but need to be replaced in order to keep around six hundred students safe. Surveillance in the younger children’s classrooms are the biggest concern.

“The elementary buildings are the ones that have some real concerns about making sure their in charge with not only teaching kids, but making sure their in a safe environment when they are away from home”, she said.

In order for passage of the bond, it will require a 57.1% majority. Prop 2 will be voted on Tuesday, April 8th.
