Battle girls basketball continues historic run

Battle girls basketball has already made history in just its first year.

The Spartans beat Notre Dame (St. Louis) on Friday, 55-51, for its the school’s first district title.

“It is nice to get our name out there for once,” junior guard Cheyanna Weaver said. “Instead of Hickman and Rock Bridge, now it’s Battle. And now is our time to show our school off.”

Battle, classified as Class 4 this season, faced a tough schedule with 11 Class 5 teams and 11 Class 4 teams. The Spartans are coached by Angie Roberds, who previously coached at Mexico and Fulton.

Roberds (William Woods ’95) is guiding the program in its inaugural year. She credits the difficult schedule the team’s attitude for the late turnaround.

“We struggled and we didn’t know each other,” Roberds said when describing her team at the start of the season. “When Christmas came around, that’s when the big shift came. That is when everything fell into place.”

Despite a winless February, the Spartans opened March with three straight wins in the district tournament. Battle plays Festus for a quarterfinals berth on Wednesday at Jefferson College in Hillsboro. Tipoff for the game is 6 PM.
