Major road closed in south Columbia for next 5 months

Columbia Public Works began work on a section of Scott Boulevard Monday, closing the road between Bellview Drive and Vawter School Road.

The intersection of Vawter School Road and Scott Boulevard will stay open for traffic heading north on Scott Boulevard then east on Vawter School Road.

It will also remain open for traffic going west on Vawter School Road, then south on Scott Boulevard.

In mid-July, the whole intersection of Vawter School Road and Scott Boulevard will close for 3 weeks.

Gale Blomenkamp with the Boone County Fire Department said the closure will not affect emergency response times in that part of the city.

The Columbia and Boone County fire departments will share responsibility for emergency calls in this area regardless of jurisdiction lines until the construction is complete.

Access to the Scott Boulevard and Jay Dix MKT trailhead parking lots will be closed, but the MKT trail will be open through the duration of the project.

These parking lots are expected to open in mid-July.

A low water crossing will be constructed on the east side of the existing Hinkson Creek bridge. Columbia Public Works asks that canoes, kayaks, and paddlers not attempt to navigate this crossing.
