University of Missouri police reports detail what happened during the University Village walkway collapse

Columbia Joint Communications received a 911 call just before five in the morning on Saturday from a concerned resident.

The reports say he woke up to a loud noise thinking it was coming from the roof.

When firefighters arrived they were expecting a collapsed roof with residents inside.

According to police reports Lt. Bruce Britt along with another fire fighter and police officer went up the walkway to the second story.

The police officer stopped to talk with a resident through the window when Lt. Britt went past him to unlock the door in case the residents were trapped.

It was at that moment the balcony collapsed from under Britt’s feet.

The other emergency personnel ran in the opposite direction down the walkway to get to the ground level to help Britt.

Firefighters were able to get Britt out from under the rubble where he was then taken to the hospital.

Firefighters were able to safely evacuate all of the residents in the building through the back windows.
