Proposed cell tower to be discussed in Rocheport

City leaders in Rocheport expect a packed house Wednesday for a discussion about a proposed 180-foot cell phone tower.

The tower, to be built by Wireless Asset Group of St. Charles, would expand AT&T service for far western part of Boone County.

But a flier sent to ABC 17 News this week showed growing opposition to the project, based on health and aesthetic concerns.

Residents who talked to ABC 17 News said they welcomed the tower because of the promise of better cell phone reception, especially closer to the Missouri River. Their concerns were over how the tower’s appearance.

Alderman Conrad Yates said he did not think the issue should be controversial.

“[The tower] will not be in the historic area,” he said. “I don’t think people will even realize it’s here, for the most part.”

The city Planning and Zoning Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Community Hall.
