Columbia crews hitting residential streets Wednesday
Street crews in Columbia started hitting neighborhoods on Wednesday after working overnight to clear major roads.
According to a news release, road crews were still focusing on first and second priority routes Tuesday night with the help of employees from other departments like Parks and Recreation, Water and Light, Parking Utilities, Sewer Utilities and outside contractors.
Priority was given to residential streets that had trash delayed this week. Workers plan to finish Monday’s and Tuesday’s routes by Friday at the latest, which means service should only be delayed by one day. Recycling for both Columbia and Jefferson City is canceled until next week.
Crews in northeast Columbia expected to make quick gains because of help from Water and Light equipment already in that area.
“Plows worked hard to keep up with the accumulating snowfall today … that was no easy task,” Public Woks Director John Glascock wrote in a news release. “Customers really helped road crews by moving their cars off of priority routes and staying off roadways as much as possible during the snowfall.”
Cars parked on the sides of first and second priority snow route streets are no longer being towed at the owner’s expense so plows could clear the roads.
Work also started in downtown Columbia around 6 p.m. Tuesday, with crews piling the snow into the middle of intersections before driving it out of the area.
