Bus drives through floodwaters in Howard County

HOWARD COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A school bus became stranded on a flooded road in Howard County on Tuesday.

The Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that it happened on Route Z. The bus involved was not from a local school district.

Student Transportation of America spokeswoman Jen Holzafel confirmed the bus did get stuck in flood waters off route Z and was also able to confirm no students were on board at the time.

STA says the driver was also unharmed after the incident.

Dave Cunningham, tow truck driver for I-70 towing towed the truck out of the water on Tuesday.

Cunningham said he didn't have enough cable and actually had to get his tow truck in the water in order to pull the bus out.

Kirsten Munck, area engineer with MODOT advised all drivers to avoid moving barricades or traveling into a road covered in water.

"We ask anybody if you encounter a roadway that's underwater, particularly barricades that our crews put out there to close the road, it's for your safety." Munck said. "Don't get out and move the barricades, don't think you can make it just because it doesn't look deep."

According to the MoDOT traveler map, Route Z is closed between County Roads 343 and 341. Route H is also closed in Howard County. MoDOT reports that nearly two dozen roads are closed due to flooding across the state, including several in Mid-Missouri.

Boone County Road and Bridge reports two road closures in the county. Crews closed the 13600 Block of Frink Road and N Route Z between Owens School and Old 124 around 6:30 a.m. According to the department's website, the roads are expected to reopen around midnight.
