The price of generic drugs are increasing dramatically

The price of prescriptions is on the rise nationwide.

Now pharmacists are calling for a congressional hearing on what they call skyrocketing generic drug costs, some going up 600%.

“In the month of January I would say that it happens almost every other day,” said Kilgore’s pharmacists, Bill Morrissey.

That is how often Morrissey sees patients have to decline their medicine that used to be $4 and is now nearly $100.

“The thing that I don’t like about it is just not understanding. I don’t like to be in the dark,” said Morrissey.

Morrissey told ABC 17 News everyone has their own ideas on why this is happening. Some believe it is due to raw shortages while others are blaming the new changes in health care. However, no one has the exact answer for why.

A theory some have is that because of the Affordable Heath Care Acts restrictions on raising drug prices, manufactures decided to dramatically increase prices before January 1st.

A pharmaceutical industry group study shows the use of generic drugs saved consumers more than one trillion dollars between 2003-2012.
