Local sheriff warning people about scam calls

A Mid-Missouri sheriff is warning local residents about a new scam involving Publishers Clearing House.

The Maries County Sheriff’s office said on Thursday it had already received several reports. Callers are telling people to put money on a prepaid card from the Dollar General in Vienna, about 40 minutes south of Jefferson City.

The scammers then promise to show up in 45 minutes with the winnings. Even if they have a call-back number, investigators are telling residents to not provide them any personal information.
