Truck accident lets chickens loose on highway

A two-vehicle accident Thursday morning sent one person to the hospital and let live chickens loose on the road. The accident happened on Highway 50 near Syracuse.

A tractor trailer carrying live chickens and a car were involved in the accident around 3 a.m.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Aleksandr Kozhukharenko, 26, of Sedalia, was traveling eastbound when he crossed the center line and sideswiped the tractor trailer.

The accident caused the truck and its trailer, full of chickens, to overturn on the side of the road. Some of the chickens got loose and had to be rounded up.

The driver, Jerry DeGroot, 53, also of Sedalia, was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

Some parts of mid-Missouri had slick roads because of overnight precipitation, but it’s not clear if that was a factor in this crash.
