Columbia plows only in neighborhoods during business hours

Plows only finished about 12 percent of the Columbia neighborhoods by 4:30 p.m. Thursday. They left to concentrate on main roads and re-freezing.

Trucks will return to residential areas by 7 a.m. Friday because of a new city policy. ABC 17 News confirmed the changes in December, after they were put up for public comment during a pre-council meeting in early 2013.

According to the new protocol, crews will only treat neighborhood roads during regular business hours, unless there is more than 4″ of snow. That means officials will not spend overtime to clear your street unless you live on a first or second priority route.

MoDot will also focus on major Columbia streets overnight, which still had snow pack on them. They will also address lettered routes, which are mostly covered.

Salt does not work in the current temperatures, so crews are either adding calcium chloride or a cinder mix.
